X. Pass/Fail Grading

  1. Courses taken to satisfy Core IMPACTS requirements, courses required for major, minor and certificate programs, courses that satisfy institutional requirements may not be taken as Pass/Fail.
  2. Major degree programs may designate only the Free Electives area of their program requirements to be fulfilled with pass/fail graded coursework. Students will need to be aware of other school/degree program requirements which may be impacted by a course completed as Pass/Fail.
  3. No more than nine credit hours of Pass/Fail coursework may be counted towards an undergraduate degree in the Free Electives area. Credit taken on a Pass/Fail basis beyond this nine-credit hour limit in the Free Electives area will earn institutional credit but the credit will not count toward graduation.
    1. The totality of the allotted pass/fail credit hours remains at a maximum of nine, even with the addition of a second undergraduate degree.
  4. In graduate programs, thesis research hours will be evaluated only on a pass/fail basis. At the discretion of the program, course work for a master's degree may include up to three additional semester credit hours on a pass/fail basis that can be used towards the degree. In any case, any individual graduate program may limit the maximum number of pass/fail hours allowed in their program.
  5. In any given term, it is up to the discretion of the academic unit offering the course to offer a course as letter grade only which would disallow a student from selecting the pass/fail grade mode option.
  6. Students who are permitted to register under the pass/fail system in classes which allow this grade mode will be so designated on the official class rolls. The grades recorded will be "S" for "Satisfactory" or "U" for "Unsatisfactory." These grades will not be included in the calculation of the grade-point average and cannot be changed to a grade that will count in the average.
  7. Students enrolled in a course on a Pass/Fail basis must meet all the typical course requirements (for example, attendance, reports, projects, examinations, labs, etc.) and will be graded in the usual way.
  8. Withdrawals from courses taken on a pass/fail basis will follow the same rules that govern withdrawals from courses included in the grade-point average (taken for a letter grade).
  9. The deadline to change the grade mode from letter grade to pass/fail (and vice versa) is the same day as the Last Day to Withdraw from Individual Courses without a Penalty.

Grade mode changes are allowed online during the registration period. After the registration period ends (phase II registration closes), the following form must be completed and submitted to the Office of the Registrar.
