English Language Proficiency
Georgia Tech requires all applicants to demonstrate English language proficiency through one of the approved methods, regardless of citizenship or native language. This approach ensures consistency, aligns with University System of Georgia (USG) policy, and supports a clear and equitable admissions process.
Approved Methods of Demonstrating English Proficiency
- Degree from an Approved Country: Evidence of a degree earned from an institution located in a country on our approved list.
- The degree must be completed prior to enrollment
- Official degree documentation must be submitted at least 30 days prior to the start of the admitted term
- Degree must be awarded by an institution accredited by a U.S. Department of Education (USDOE)-recognized accrediting agency - see Admissions Overview, Process, and Requirements
- Degree from an English-Medium Institution: Evidence of a degree earned from an institution where English is the primary language of instruction, as verified by Georgia Tech.
- A Medium of Instruction (MOI) letter may be required for verification
- The degree must be completed prior to enrollment
- Official documentation must be submitted at least 30 days prior to the start of the admitted term
- Degree must be awarded by an institution authorized to grant degrees by the appropriate governmental authority in the country of study
- TOEFL iBT Overall ≥ 4.5
- Speaking ≥ 3.5
- Writing ≥ 4
- Listening ≥ 4
- Reading ≥ 4
- IELTS Academic Overall Band Score 7.0
- Writing: 5.5
- Speaking: 6.5
- Listening: 6.5
- Reading: 6.5
- Successful completion of a University System of Georgia (USG) campus-based ESL program
- Documentation must be submitted prior to enrollment
Disability Accommodations
Applicants who require accommodations, special arrangements for disabilities, or health-related needs should refer to the services of TOEFL or IELTS. Applicants must provide medical evidence to the testing service to support their claim.

- English language proficiency is required for enrollment.
- Applicants are responsible for monitoring their application status and ensuring that all required documentation is submitted by applicable deadlines.
- Additional documentation may be requested to verify English proficiency.
- Meeting Georgia Tech’s minimum score requirements does not guarantee admission, as some graduate programs require higher scores. Applicants should review individual program requirements on the Degree Programs page prior to applying.
