Master of Science in Economics

The Master of Science in Economics program curriculum is designed to enhance quantitative and analytical skills. 

The MS in Economics is open to all individuals with diverse backgrounds and needs. However, the curriculum is especially geared toward the following individuals:

  • Undergraduates with a desire to enhance analytical skills to be more competitive or command a higher salary in the job market
  • Individuals with a desire to strengthen one's application before pursuing an additional graduate degree
    • Commonly this is a doctorate in Economics but our students also pursue Juris Doctorates, MBAs, and Ph.D.'s in related fields such as public policy or international affairs 
  • Engineers who seek to use their quantitative skills in an applied business, data analysis, or decision-making context
  • Working individuals who are looking to formalize and broaden their expertise to advance their careers or become more effective in their current roles.

Students must select 6 hours of electives and may select a Research-Intensive Track, Internship track or Course track. Advisors will approved electives.

  • Students must earn at least a ‘C’ in order for coursework to be considered towards degree requirements.
  • Students must have an overall GPA of at least 2.70 at the time of graduation 
  • Minimum course credit hours at 6000 to 9000 level: 24
BS/MS in Economics

Students with a GPA of 3.25 or higher in ECON courses are eligible to apply for the program after completion of 30 semester credit hours at Georgia Tech, but before the completion of 75 semester credit hours, including transfer and advanced placement credits. Students who have more than 75 credit hours will be considered for the program on a case-by-case basis.  Admissions decisions will be based on GPA and judgments of the Graduate Committee and faculty who have served as advisors or instructors. Continuation in the program will require the B.S. student to maintain a GPA of 3.25 or higher in their ECON courses. The program will not penalize students who opt out after the bachelor’s degree.

Students in the BS-MS ECON program will take 6 hours of ECON electives at the 6000 level which will be used toward ECON electives in the BS in Economics program and may be used toward core requirements or electives in the MS in Economics program. Prior to enrolling in 6000-level ECON courses, students will be required to complete ECON 3110 Advanced Microeconomics, ECON 3120 Advanced Macroeconomics, and ECON 3161 Econometrics. 

Students are encouraged to take 6 credit hours from the MSECON core courses (ECON 6105ECON 6106ECON 6140, or ECON 6160) during enrollment as a BS student.  However, they will have flexibility to enroll in any 6000 ECON course whose prerequisite requirements they have met. 

BSMS Option
BS in Business Administration and Ivan Allen College Master's programs

This option is open to all undergraduate Business Administration students interested in the following Ivan Allen College Master's Programs:

  • Master of Science in Applied Languages and Intercultural Studies
  • Master of Science in Digital Media
  • Master of Science in Economics
  • Master of Science in History and Sociology of Technology and Science
  • Master of Science in International Affairs
  • Master of Science in Public Policy

Students must submit a BSMS application meet admissions criteria to be considered for the option.

Students may double count up to 6 credit hours of letter-grade 4000-level courses to the Master's program. Course selection for double-counted 4000-level courses must be approved by the Master's program advisor. Students must still complete the 12 credit hour MS core.
